Source: Global companies, like the Ontario government, flock to Canada, especially Ontario, because they are leading the way in self-driving technology and creating a unique location to attract related investment and employment. In particular, Ontario is one of the largest automobile production bases in North America, and is second only to California in the field of ICT in the United States. Global companies are rushing to Canada to collaborate with the University of Toronto and AI Institute, which produced Geoffrey Hinton, the AI godfather, as it has become a mecca for artificial intelligence (AI), a key technology for self-driving cars.

Source: Ontario opened Canada’s first Autonomous Vehicle Innovation Network (AVIN) model zone in 2017 and recently opened Ottawa L5, a self-driving testing facility with a total area of 7.6 km2 and 16 km of actual road environment (signals, crosswalks, etc.). In this way, Ontario provides a perfect environment for developing futuristic cars, and in addition to global companies, many promising start-ups are active with unlimited potential. Here are some startups related to self-driving technology in Canada that are expected to be active in the future.

Fit stop (Pitstop)

Based on Toronto and Waterloo, Fitstop utilizes artificial intelligence for Predictive Maintenance of Self-Driving Vehicles and provides real-time data on vehicle conditions to various types of Self-Driving Vehicles. It was recently introduced to Auto Service World as a game changer that changes the automobile industry.

Darwin AI (Darwin AI)

Deep learning networks have enabled automotive applications to range from computer vision to speech recognition. Darwin AI, based on Waterloo, helps explain and optimize the performance of neural networks using techniques developed by professors at Waterloo University. Darwin AI was also introduced as one of the top 10 startups in Auto Mobility LA2018.

EVE (Evolved Vehicle Environment)

Personalization, Lifestyle, and Connectivity are three words that illustrate how people perceive cars of the future in the automotive industry. Ottawa-based EVE has already worked with Tesla and Subaru to allow customers to change the vehicle interface as they like.

Pantonium (pantonium)

Toronto-based Pentonium has developed technology to automatically optimize public transportation and smart mobility routes, and is conducting an on-demand pilot project to visit passengers according to the needs of users, rather than running the route in Belleville, Ontario.

Weather Telematics

About 75 million people live in places where it snows a lot in winter in North America, and self-driving cars operating in such areas must be able to predict snow, ice and various other weather changes. Weather telematics based on Ottawa analyzes weather, traffic and other data in real time and provides map-based alerts and notifications to vehicles.
